“I think I’d go crazy with all the distractions.” This is what my close friend told me when he found out that I chose to work from home full time (WFH).
He just couldn’t understand how I could focus on work stay productiveand get your job done in a house full of kids and other distractions.
The truth is, he was right. Working from home time management is definitely difficult at times.
But that’s the way it is get out of debt, start your own company, or be disciplined with your money. It’s all part of life a Rich life.
7 steps to improve your time management from home
1. Make an inventory of your tasks
Before you can start managing your time, the first thing you need to know is exactly what you will need for most days.
Just like when you are Set a budget for the first timeyou have to start with your fixed costs. In the case of time management, this means your non-negotiable duties. First, make a list of tasks that simply need to be done each day (along with the time it takes to complete them).
These can be:
- Shower and get ready (0h40m)
- Driving children to school (0h25m)
- Exercise (0h45m)
- Zoom meeting with Boss (1h00m)
- Have lunch (0h30m)
2. Add non-negotiable tasks to your calendar
At this point, add non-negotiable tasks to your calendar, starting with the least flexible. For example, if you have a meeting with your boss it is non-negotiable.
The training, however, can be carried out at any time fits your schedule.
Bring children to school: non-negotiable. End a project at work: flexible in terms of time.
3. Add the remaining critical tasks to your calendar
Finally, you should add to your calendar any remaining tasks that simply need to be done one way or another. These tasks can be flexible in terms of when They get done, but they’re still not an option – you have to complete them.
After you’ve added all of the tasks, you should have a fairly complete calendar depending on your work and life situation.
When you have a large family, you may have more commitments to fill your day. If you work part-time, you may have fewer work duties. And so on.
4. Remove distracting notifications
Now that you’ve established your schedule (keep in mind that you may need to repeat the first three steps daily, weekly, or monthly), it’s time to make sure you’re sticking to your schedule.
To do this, we will harness the power of technology and reduce distractions from the same technology.
Turn on calendar notifications
First of all, you should make sure that you have a calendar app on your phone that allows you to view your calendar on your desktop as well.
Then make sure your calendar notifications are turned on. You want to see when it’s time to focus on a specific work item, pick up your daughter from karate, or make a Zoom call with your boss. These notifications help you get your job done.
Basically turn everything else off
Turn off any other notifications that you get by default on your phone or computer to get serious focus – – Family chat groups, social media notifications, game notifications, and possibly even email notifications – – This helps you focus on the work.
(Ironic side note: my family group chat notification triggered 12 times while writing this short section. This has now been fixed.)
5. Assign certain areas to certain tasks
Not everyone has the luxury of a dedicated home officeyou should still create a separation between your work areas, play areas, family areas, hobby areas, etc.
When you literally only have one place to get everything done, use other pointers to get your mind in the right place.
For example, maybe you Only listen to classical music when you are working. Or you use a laptop for official work, but a tablet or a phone for free time on the Internet.
6. Get everyone on board with your schedule
One of the hardest parts of a WFH schedule is keeping the people in your life from distracting you from what needs to be done.
This requires Overcommunication from her side. Explain to your children, partners, friends or roommates when you want to work, what visual or environmental cues you have (“When I listen to music, I have to do something”) and what you need them to be successful.
You may also need to seek help and support from your co-workers, teammates, and your boss to make sure you are all in when you are “at work” but when you are not “at work” you are in a “life meeting.”
7. Automate as much as possible
Of course, all of this advice sounds good, but if you spend an extra hour or two each week managing your time, what is the real point in “being more productive”?
Sure, you can better manage your time on paper, but at the end of each day, week, or month you don’t have more time (or rest) than you did before.
That means it might be worth hiring someone to manage your calendar for you. At the very least, you should automate your calendar to repeat the critical tasks mentioned earlier in this article. Set it once and forget about it. Then just follow the directions on your calendar for each day.
Mischief made it.
When you honor what you’ve put on your own calendar, it’s about self-respect. Once you’ve made up your mind to put something on your own calendar, you have enough respect for yourself to stick to the plan in due course.
If you’re constantly not doing things that you have set on your own calendar, repeat steps 1 and 2 of this list asking yourself, “Is what I put on my calendar what I actually want or need to do ? “
The truth is: if you don’t automate and manage your own calendar, the world will fill it for you and you will never get to the important tasks that matter most to you.
At the end of the day…
It is what works best for you. Planning the life around your work cQuite a challenge, but once you figure it out it can be incredibly rewarding.
Be patient with yourself. Forgive your partner, children or roommates – they learn just like you.
And above all, remember: work is not the most important thing in your life. Your passions, hobbies, and personal relationships shouldn’t suffer just because you are working from home.
